Teachers in Rhode Island currently maintain their certification by showing evidence of continuous professional development. Creating a personal PD plan is a unit-wide assignment in the School of Education for all student teachers. The steps below are designed to guide you through this process so that we can complete it efficiently.
Reflect on your teaching so far. Choose one area that you know you need to strengthen. Use this area to list 1-3 needs that might serve as
What is the need?
How will improvement help your students?
How will improvement help your school?
RIBT Standard/Element Addressed?
1.
Higher DOK with respect to asking questions and creating authentic assessments
think at a higher level and more deeply about content
Higher grades, rigor, and standardized test scores
RIBT 9
2.
More content knowledge and stories/connections to drive points home
provide more examples, make connections between content and real life and to students
higher grades, students own their learning
RIBT 4
3.
Professional Development
up to date with content and technology
better quality teachers
RIBT 10
Formulate a professional development goal based the needs that you have identified. This goal should be:
measurable/observable
should lead to improvement of teaching, student achievement, and/or improvement of learning environment.
should describe new knowledge or skills that you will acquire and how that knowledge/skill will affect the school/district setting.
linked to applicable Rhode Island Beginning Teacher Standards and elements, e.g. RIBTS 2.4.
In the space below describe you goal and plan in two paragraphs.
In the first paragraph, describe a rationale your professional development goal. This rationale should describe the goal, the personal need that it will address, and how this goal benefits your students and your perspective school.
I. Professional Development Goal
My Professional Development Goal is to gain more content knowledge in biology and general science. This will have advantages that will help me communicate information at a higher level and with more depth and create/provide higher level questions and authentic assessments. To be measurable or observable, it will come from student assessment. I will create assessments with higher DOK and use their grades to evaluate my success. This will not only be a good measuring tool for myself but it will better the students by challenging them, they will take more ownership of their learning and have more depth and breadth to their learning instead of just reaching the surface of concepts students will have a much better understanding of the material. This will affect the school and community because the students will have more connections with the community because the authentic investigations I want to so with the students are community based as well as create relationships with the students to the island on a deeper level from scientific investigations that they will conduct themselves. The school as a whole will benefit because test scores should increase, student morale hopefully increase too. RIBT 4,9.
Now that you have a PD goal, think about what type of learning opportunities you will participate in to address your needs. Use these links to investigate learning options:
Based on what you have found out, write a 1-2 paragraph narrative outlining at least two ways (PD categories) you will engage in engage in by the end of your first year of teaching. For each activity, explain how you think it will address the need that you have identified.
II. Professional Development Plan
Two ways that I can address the needs of my goals is to continue taking classes, continue membership with the NSTA, substitute as much as possible and make the very most of my experiences in the classroom. Upon graduation, I plan to petition ride for my general science requirements to obtain my general science teaching certification, I may or may not have to take one more physics class. Once that is complete, then I want to pursue either my chemistry or physics certification also by petitioning ride to see what I would need in order to obtain those teaching certifications. At the BI School I would love to take over field biology if the opportunity arrises or start a physics class and start teaching 1/5 that way and slowly take classes over from the current high school science teacher who currently teaches earth, physical, bio, anatomy and every other year field biology and when there are students to take it chemistry. I plan to stay in close communication with my CT's and sub for them as much as possible and maintain a good working relationship with them and continue to be up to date as to what is going in education with resources, new strategies, engagement practices, technology so I don't get rusty and I am able to build on the skills that I have acquired over the years. All of these things combined will help me once I do get a job to have more content under my belt, continued experience and will make me a more confident teacher with effective engagement strategies and can provide higher level thinking/productive questions and assessments for students in the future.
